Emergence of Online games
Online games started emerging during mid-1920s and before emergence of online games, offline games ruled the industry and developers of offline games used to develop and sell them (H. Wi. 2009). Offline games were played by multiplayer in one room or location. From 1980s to mid 90s offline games on computers were played by using MS DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System). But after emergence of MS Windows and internet, online games started emerging. Online multi user games are part of today’s interactive media, and online game industry has emerged as rival of Hollywood in terms of revenue generation (R.V.Kelly. 2004). When multi players play online games from different parts of world then they interact with each other and rising number of players are indicating that every dawn brings news online game players to this interactive world of media.
Online Game players
Millions of online players play games on daily bases. Average age of online game players is 26 years and normally every player gives about 22 hours of his time to these games per week (Nick. Y, Dec 2006). In twenty first century, time is very important factor for any business regarding profit and if average player is spending 22 hours to games per week than it proves that online game industry is earning a lot.
Some players think that violence in games don’t make them aggressive because they release their frustration while playing games but few players comment that violent games make players emotion less and they don’t stand against violence in real life when someone else suffers (R.V.Kelly . 2004). Answer to the question is still not available that ‘How and to what extant online games of different genres are affecting online game players’. Shawn Woolley was twenty one years old, online game player from USA commit suicide because a girl rejected him in ‘Ever Quest’ game (R.V.Kelly. 2004). Woolley represents all those players who are known as ‘Electronic crack’ and are over addicted and are intensely affected by online games.
Online Games as entertainment and industry
There is a variety of internet business models but online games are giving the best entertainment to online users. Intelligence report of DFG states that in 2011 online game industry will cross the figure of thirteen billion USD in the market (Christopher and Yang. 2008).
There is no doubt that online games are flourishing better than any other online business at the moment and prediction is also same for future but at this point there is a need to ponder on impacts and side effects of these games on youth and even elders these days. Most important aspect of online games is that there is no age limitation for players to play. Anyone who can understand and wants to play online games, can find those games online which are of his or her taste.
Online Games and virtual world
Relation between real and virtual worlds exists. Virtual world is surrounded by some barriers and online game players live a life in virtual world by flying, jumping, becoming invisible and getting second life etc while in real life at same time things happen normally (Castronova. 2006) .Several writers have written about virtual and real worlds, most importantly relation between real and virtual worlds. Online games have several implications and are directly related to virtual world as players play online games and become a part of synthetic world but at the same time they are breathing in real world, where life is normal and every human being only gets single life to live.
Implications of Online games in Defence
RTS (Real time strategy) game is state of the art technology. RTS games are on line computer games which are used to defeat opponent by entering real data and decisions are made by players in real life (Andersen, Toftgaard J, Zeng Y, Christensen and Dung. 2009). RTS games are also playing vital role in defence system of few countries. Operators enter data and then RTS games suggest offensive or defensive positions according to the data entered. Such as number of aircrafts with specifications, number of infantry, number of tanks etc. So Online games have made defence so simple and easy because for defence of any country, planning is key and when data is entered in these types of games result can be seen in seconds.
Online Games, Broadband and South Korea
The highest percentage of broadband subscribers in world is in South Korea and number of online game players is also more as compare to console games ( Dal Yong Jin, 2010). SO number of online game players is directly proportional to the number of broadband users. Online games flourished when broadband was introduced. Korea is leading the world in the field of broadband and online games. Online game players don’t pay monthly charges to play games in Korea but they need to pay on hourly bases (Jin. Y. 2010). In western countries, online game players normally pay on monthly bases. Majority of Korean people try to cross the road even when green light is about to turn red but most of Chinese people stop and don’t cross the road when green light is about to become red as a safety measure (Jin. Y. 2010) Pace and speed of Korean nation can be judged and analysed by their daily life and Korea is ahead from all of other nations and countries when it comes to broadband and online games.
Users of online computer games are increasing with the passage of time. This business has a status of industry now as online game inductor is competing Hollywood. There are lots of examples all over the world that how this industry is affecting daily life of people. People have lost their jobs, students are not performing well in studies and even online games are affecting relations. As they are so addictive that when writers who wrote books about online games and wanted to experience the virtual world themselves played for hours and hours without realising that how many hours they spent. According to available research and articles about online games, it can be concluded that online games have more disadvantages than advantages in practical life of users, but there is no doubt that there are few positive implications such as RTS(real time strategy) games which are used by defence departments in world.
As there are millions of online game players around the world including school going children and youngsters. These games have different genres including arcade, battle, fight etc; there should be international laws which may restrict all young players from playing games based on violence and killing of other game characters. There is no argument which can ever prove that violence can be good for teen agers or youngsters.
