Social implication of the Internet
The social implications of the Internet on inequality, politics, community, and other domains will depend on the legal and economic policies shaping this technology. Communication through the Internet has had a positive social impact on communities, individuals and society. Its large access increases the involvement of people socially and this enhances social identity. The positive or negative impact associated with the Internet will mainly depend on the quality of the individuals online activities and how much time is spent online at the expense of other valuable activities. The cultural impact of the Internet will vary greatly among the users. Internet has changed the business environment with the development of e-commerce. Due to the many vulnerabilities of the web, community security has been a major problem for e-commerce. The basic requirements for e-commerce are authentication, confidentiality, privacy, protection and integrity of data (Dimaggio, Hargittai, Neuman and Robinson, 2001).
However, e-commerce operates under the environment of trust. The influx of social networking sites such as face book, twitter and more have changed the online business environment. Many marketers have utilized these sites in advertising to win more online customers. However, the future of the Internet and its social impact will be established by the resolution of the following policies: ensuring equity in Internet access, establishing security for Internet users and redefining the rules that govern intellectual property around the world. Nevertheless, the fight to control the Internet due to its supremacy as an electronic market place of ideas remains the most productive arena in sociological research (Kiesler et al, 2001).
